How to MeasureVIEW GALLERY
Measuring is simple if you follow the guidelines below. Please click on the relevant image(s).
- Measure in CM (you can add fractions)
- NB all the images apart from Face Fix assume that doors and windows open outwards
DOOR RECESS
HEIGHT

Floor to underside of lintel
Measure at the point where the grille will be fitted. This is usually as close to the frame as possible allowing for any handles etc. Measure in at least three places. If there is a carpet, lift and measure from solid floor underneath. Take the shortest measurement.
WIDTH

Top and bottom of the recess
Measure at the top and the bottom of the recess. If there is skirting board in the recess, measure above this - it can be removed or trimmed out on installation. Take the widest measurement.
WINDOW RECESS
HEIGHT

Sill to underside of lintel
Measure at the point where the grille will be fitted. This is usually as close to the frame as possible allowing for any handles etc. Measure in at least three places. Take the shortest measurement.
WIDTH

Top and bottom of the recess
Measure at the top and the bottom of the recess. Take the widest measurement.
FLAG
The door and window will have separate grilles (this only works if both door and window opens outwards).
HEIGHT

WIDTH

T SHAPE
The door and windows will have separate grilles (this only works if both door and window open outwards).
HEIGHT

WIDTH

FACE FIX
This method of measuring is applicable where there is no recess or for most inward opening doors and windows.
HEIGHT

Door and window height
Measure the height of the door from the step to 5-10cm above where the recess finishes. With a window you may need to measure 5-10cm above and below the recess.
WIDTH

Width of recess + a percentage
Measure the width of the recess and add 10% to either side for a double sash (locking in middle) and 20% for single sash grille (locking on one side).
We will calculate the additional cost of the frame.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure the height of my door or window recess?
To measure the height, use a tape measure to determine the distance from the floor to the underside of the lintel. It’s essential to measure at the point where the grille will be fitted, typically as close to the frame as possible, accounting for any handles or obstructions. For accuracy, take measurements in at least three places. If there’s a carpet, lift it to measure from the solid floor beneath, and always use the shortest measurement to ensure a snug fit.
What is the correct way to measure the width of my recess?
Measure the width at both the top and bottom of the recess to ensure consistency. If there’s a skirting board present, measure above it, as it can be removed or trimmed during installation. Always take the widest measurement to accommodate any variations in the recess size. This approach ensures that the grille fits seamlessly within the recess.
How should I measure for a face-fixed installation?
For face-fixed installations, where the grille is mounted directly onto the wall, measure the height of the door or window from the step to approximately 5–10 cm above where the recess finishes. For windows, measure both 5–10 cm above and below the recess. For the width, measure the recess and add 10% for a double sash grille (locking in the middle) or 20% for a single sash grille (locking on one side). This ensures the grille covers the desired area adequately.
What if my window or door has a bay or T-shape recess?
For bay or T-shaped recesses, it’s crucial to provide a photograph of the area to assist in accurate measurement and fitting. These complex shapes may require custom solutions to ensure the grille fits properly. The Safeguard Security team can offer guidance based on the provided images. Always ensure that the measurements are taken at the point where the grille will be fitted, as close to the frame as possible.
Can I measure in inches instead of centimeters?
While the standard measurement unit is centimeters, you can measure in inches if preferred. However, it’s essential to convert the measurements accurately when ordering. Precision is key to ensure the grille fits perfectly. Using a consistent unit of measurement throughout the process helps maintain accuracy.
How do I measure for a flag or T-shape installation?
For flag or T-shape installations, where the door and window have separate grilles, measure the height and width of both the door and window. Ensure that both open outwards, as this method is applicable only for outward-opening doors and windows. Take measurements as close to the frame as possible, accounting for any handles or obstructions. Providing accurate dimensions ensures that both grilles fit properly and function as intended.
Why is it important to measure accurately?
Accurate measurements are crucial to ensure that the security grille fits properly and functions effectively. Incorrect measurements can lead to gaps, improper locking, or difficulty in operation. By following the provided guidelines and taking multiple measurements, you can achieve a precise fit. If in doubt, it’s advisable to consult with the Safeguard Security team for assistance.
What should I do if I'm unsure about my measurements?
If you’re uncertain about any aspect of the measurement process, it’s recommended to contact the Safeguard Security team for guidance. They can provide advice based on your specific situation and may request photographs to assist in the assessment. Additionally, you can utilize the photo quote service by uploading images of your windows or doors. This service allows the team to offer a more accurate estimate and ensure the correct grille is selected.
