Longer and Darker Nights

In the autumn, the clocks go back, and it starts to get darker a lot sooner. Of course, darkness is a housebreaker’s best friend. Surprisingly,  break-in statistics tend to score even higher during the autumn period than December. Even though December is a highest-risk month for a property, due to the holidays season. However seeing retractable window and door security grilles on a home, thieves are most likely to simply move on. They won’t even try that house. Security grilles make their job way too complicated and loud, to risk getting caught trying to cut through sturdy metal grilles.

Economic and Political Uncertainty

Darker nights in the autumn also coupled with the energy crisis, and still quite adverse economic environment is likely to spike property crime rates even further. Energy prices, food and other commodity prices have seen significant increases in recent months. Furthermore the political scene also remains uncertain, with the ongoing Russian war. This further weakens an already uncertain economy. It also further deteriorates peoples’ sense of security. This can only mean one thing. People who are desperate, are even more desperate in times like this.

Retractable window and door security grilles are still considered the most effective preventative security measure against break-ins. Contrary to modern security cameras and alarm systems, concertina security grilles actually prevent and stop burglars entering a home. Installing additional layers of sturdy physical barriers at each potential entry point to a house, have always proved to be the ultimate solution preventing unwanted visitors.

We believe however that the more we can keep up with learning about burglars new tricks, the more we can help our customers. Sharing our expertise and experience is an integral part of our service to our customers. Hence in this article we have brought two of the most recent – and surprising – tricks that we have seen burglars started to use. Apart from raising awareness, they may even make a great table talk subject.

First one is a shocking damage to the front door, especially the ones made of cheap plastic materials with Euro locks on them. Using a blowtorch, they simply heat and melt the UPVC or composite material around the lock. This would compromise or expose the lock itself. 

Another trick is using a small piece of magnet. Burglars slip it over the bolt-hole of an unlocked door. This prevents the bolt to latch properly. They may do this very quickly and unnoticeably whilst the family is at home during daylight, or later in the evening. The intruder then returns to the house once the owners are sleeping or away. They can enter easily, as the property is virtually unlocked. 

Security Grilles Outmanoeuvre the Sharpest of Intruders

Retractable security grilles present the ultimate protection against any of the above burglary attempts. Firstly, even just the sight of security grilles on a property will most likely deter any attempt, as they are too complicated to start fiddling with. Secondly, window and door security grilles also add a physical barrier to each potential entry point on a house. They are made of durable aluminium that won’t rust, yet, they are lightweight enough for a smooth operation. 

In our view it is much cheaper to install security grilles now, than having to repair the damages following a break in. Security grilles save the trauma, offer a sense of ultimate security, and work out cheaper than a burglary.

Summer of 2022 is especially a sensitive time. If we think about it, this is the first proper summer when people feel comfortable to travel again. We can finally travel without any restrictions after the dreaded and long drawn out Covid 19 pandemic. The airports are certainly experiencing an unprecedented influx of holiday makers, and struggle to keep up. This however also means unprecedented numbers of abandoned homes at the same time. 

Do not be fooled by police and government figures that may not show such an obvious increase. We have previously touched upon this interesting phenomenon in a recent blog post. This may happen because of a number of factors.

Firstly, as burglars are getting smarter and more experienced, many of them do not get caught. Hence a shortfall in the actual convictions, which dilutes the figures. Secondly, there are other crimes committed during a burglary, for example a car theft or altercation. These incidents may be classed under a different category, other than “burglary”. This can also significantly skew the statistics. 

Security Grilles for Windows & Doors

Having spent over 25 years in the security industry, we are always of the opinion that trouble is best prevented in the first place. Retractable security grilles are effective in a number of ways. The sight of security grilles on a home will most likely deter any attempt of burglary. They prove to be too complicated to start fiddling with.

Window and door security grilles also add a physical barrier therefore strengthening any potential entry points into a home. They can also be discreetly retracted, and easily hidden behind the curtains when not required. Window grilles are also very effective to keep rooms perfectly safe whilst letting fresh air circulating during summer months. Can even  sleep with open windows all night. 

We always say it is so much easier, and significantly cheaper to install security grilles now. It is certainly more expensive having to fix the damages and replace the valuables, once a burglary took place. Something to think about before going away on holiday!
