If we have followed the pandemic figures, and government statistics – being a hot topic – a little closer than we normally would follow statistics it has given us the opportunity to gain a little insight into how statistics work. We may have found that more often than not, statistics per se can be subject to great debates if we are only looking at the numbers without the bigger picture. As straightforward as they may sound, they are often subject to different interpretations. For example one of the most debated points during the pandemic was how we class & how we count covid deaths? Also how do we count pre existing conditions into a death scenario?

In the same vein, crime rates can show a slightly distorted picture from what happens in reality, depending on how a certain incident is classed? For example if someone breaks in to a home, they take the car keys and drive off, it is most likely will be classed as vehicle theft, rather than burglary. Or another example if someone breaks into a home, and the owner confronts them, someone gets hurt. Most likely this incident will be classed as violent crime. Yet from a home owner’s perspective, in both cases – very importantly – someone has entered their home in the first place. This way burglary crime rates may be on the rise in uncertain times like these, but because some of them are classed into different categories they might not provide an accurate pictures of exactly how many homes have been broken into.

We also know that our industry is very much a reactive market, meaning that home and business owners often only take preventative measures once an incident occurs. This can however be prevented of course – regardless of what crime rates are showing – if the question of security is regularly revisited and action is taken way before anything happens.
